"Zenwear" to the world!

"Mindfulness," the meditation training method so popular in the US that it’s become well-known at leading companies including Google, Apple, and Intel, originated in Zen Buddhism.

Samue work clothes were invented by Zen monks.

We plan to bring our samue "Zenwear" to the world from the birthplace of Zen: Kamakura, Japan. And humbly ask for your support!

Crowdfunding Goal

Bring stylish samue work clothes from Kamakura, the capital of Zen, to the world!

We want to share our "Zenwear," the optimal clothes for mindfulness practice, which is based in Zen Buddhist meditation techniques.

[What is Zenwear?]

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Zenwear is mindfulness wear for modern life, born in Kamakura, the capital of Zen. This new clothing combines and balances traditional, mobility-focused temple work clothes (samue) with stylish, contemporary clothing design.

The Roots of Samue (Zen Buddhist monks' daily work clothes)

Originally samue were worn by Zen Buddhist monks when carrying out daily physical work, like cleaning and working in the fields (where work equals training). They are traditional Japanese clothes for work and everyday life. Functional and loose fitting, they can be worn in any situation. For this reason, they are now popular with the general public, too.

Functional, With a Gentle Spirit

Because few apparel shops sell samue, few people have tried them. But the design is probably familiar. They look good and the mobility they afford is outstanding. A top and bottom set is the standard style, which makes creating a complete outfit simple. And they look great no matter one's age or gender. These are very practical clothes. And though simple, they convey classic style and spirituality, in the spirit of long, cherished use, while also being gentle on the environment.

[What is Mindfulness?]

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

The Connection Between the Hot Topic of Mindfulness and Zen

Zen practitioners, from Steve Jobs of Apple to Ichiro Suzuki, Michael Jordan, and Kazuo Inamori‚ all successful individuals famous far beyond their generation and field‚ have adopted the practice. In recent years, against the background of the Zen way of thinking, a more practical "mindfulness" training method has received much attention, all centered around Silicon Valley. In 1979, Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn, influenced by the ideas of D.T. Suzuki (a Buddhist scholar of Engaku-ji in Kamakura who spent his last years at Tokei-ji), utilized this "mindfulness" as a mental science to address anxiety issues.

Zen Buddhism, Mindfulness as a Contemporary Social Scientific Solution

"Mindfulness," is a very important means for dealing with stress, improving creativity and health, but has many other benefits. In recent years, the mechanism has been demonstrated in the field of neuroscience and garnered further attention. In 2014, Time magazine published a special feature about "The Mindful Revolution." And Arianna Huffington, the founder of The Huffington Post, declared that "mindfulness is mainstream in American society." Leading companies, like Google and Intel, that have implemented mindfulness-based employee training programs, have grown to 35% (according to The Huffington Post survey).

To meet these global needs, just as there is yoga wear for yoga, Zenwear is for Zen.

We want to bring these clothes, optimized for mindfulness, to the world.

Concept (the Continued Existence of MADE IN JAPAN Quality and Traditional Methods)

Japan's Proud Spinning Techniques and Their Roots

Starting around the Edo period, cotton cultivation grew rapidly in Japan, and by the 1930s, superior technology was present to the degree that Japan was able to become the top cotton exporter globally. However, the industry is now unrecognizable. Most areas have been converted to contemporary clothing production, and traditionally inherited techniques are being lost.

What is the Continued Existence of Traditional Methods?

"Zenwear" employs the Japanese weaving and dyeing technology that has gained high praise abroad.

If there is an increase in demand overseas, it would contribute to the development and support of traditional industries. Should demand and value come together in business, traditions will not grow old, but will instead survive as useful technologies.

David Mark Atkinson, the CEO of Konishi Decorative Arts & Crafts, which performs repairs and construction on national treasures and cultural assets in Japan, including Tsurugaoka Hachimangu shrine in Kamakura, said the following in an interview:

"Before traditions became traditions, originally they are supposed to have been proper businesses. Exploring the intent of the consumer means continually changing oneself. That is why it becomes a tradition. For the kimono to continue to exist, it must be made into an honest business."

Rather than simply protect a tradition and let it grow old, making it new is what allows it remain a living thing. In the end, we believe this is what the continued existence of traditional needs.

Design (New Fashion Using Traditional Technology)

Achieving a contemporary style with the comfort of a samue, without standard fasteners.

Although the samue is traditional Japanese clothing, anyone can easily wear it, even without knowledge of traditional fasteners. It can be washed at home, an important, practical feature. This is a new samue that combines and balances traditional, mobility-focused temple work clothes (samue) and stylish, contemporary clothing design.

A Design Refined Through Repeated Trial and Error and the Design of the Production Process

This is a design that aims to be stylish and worn like contemporary clothes, but that also considers the relaxed wearability, mobility, and comfort of traditional Japanese clothes.

A pattern maker with domestic and international experience in suits and casual wear at large brands is responsible for our patterns. They are created with consideration given to design, modeling samples, sewing specifications, sample tests for comfort, and other factors.

A Rational Product Process that Creates No Waste

When cutting fabric for contemporary clothes, about 70% is utilized; the remaining approximate 30% is thrown away.

In traditional Japanese clothes, nearly 95% of the fabric is utilized, a process that creates no garbage or waste.

In addition, contemporary clothing fabrics use a wide, 100-130 cm textile, while traditional Japanese fabrics are characterized, in order to not waste fabric, by the use of a narrow 38-41 cm textile.

In the production of these samue work clothes, much thought was given minimizing waste. Furthermore, the designs and pattern making have been considered and designed in such a way as to allow the use of both contemporary fabrics and traditional Japanese fabrics in production.

- Fabric and Sewing (Japanese Crafts that Receive High Accolades Abroad)

Made In Japan, Highly Esteemed Globally

A fabric called "wanuno" is used in the production of these samue work clothes. We create a special ultra-fine cotton yarn that is twisted after boiling. By carefully weaving to a high density on an old shuttle made for slowly weaving fabric, we achieve a strong, durable fabric that is also light and has a texture that is soft to the touch. For production, we have asked a Hamamatsu textile weaver, who has exhibited at Milano Unica, the international textile fair held in Italy, and who also does business with large apparel companies, not only in Italy, but also France. This is a true Japanese fabric artisan.

Not Just "Sewing," The Job of Creating Form From That Which Lacks Form

Our sewing is done in an area famous for work wear, Hiroshima Prefecture, which boasts 50% of the domestic share. Making the these simple, no-waste samue work clothes properly demands superior technical abilities.

Our sewing thread is not ordinary spun yarn made of polyester. We use 100% cotton hard-twist thread, strengthened by the addition of a strong twist.

Our method is not simply about making beautiful clothing. Instead, we think about the people who wear our clothes. We consider comfort, how we can devise a way to preserve design sensibilities, and use trial and error to make them stronger and more durable.

The Oldest and Newest "Natural Fermentation-Based Natural Indigo Dyeing" Technology, Unparalleled Globally

At present, only a small percentage of circulating indigo dye is natural. It is precious. Our dyeing is performed in an area famous for indigo dye, Awa-ai in Tokushima Prefecture. Authentic indigo dye, which uses no artificial materials, was praised as "Japan Blue" by Westerners visiting Japan during the Meiji period. It became the national color of Japan. The dyeing process itself makes the fabric stronger, sterilizes it, helps repel insects and remove odors, and gives it a cooling effect in the summer and a warming effect in the winter. It’s also effective in preventing and improving rough skin and atopy (according to Hirosaki University research). It is also viewed as a dyeing technology unique to Japan, unparalleled elsewhere in the world.

Japanese Plant Dyes With the Wide Range of Support From the World

Plant dye artisans in Kyoto and Kamakura dye each item by hand, one by one.

In terms of color, in planning for overseas sales, we are creating a colorful selection, while using natural plant dyeing techniques. We have devised a lineup of 7 colors, including authentic indigo.

Hello, this is Shun Suzuki, project founder.

Originally, I launched an IT company and worked in the web/system development field. For a year and a half, I wandered overseas. Traveling in Asia, Europe, America and other areas showed me completely different ways of life. Things such as the interpretation of laws and economic values reminded me that there really are a variety of values in the world. It also simultaneously made me review the uniqueness, culture, and spirituality of Japan.

When I participated in a community-building contest in the town where I lived, my focus fell on Japanese clothes, specifically kimonos. I proposed a community-building plan focusing on kimonos and won.

I started an NPO, which has assisted the spread of kimono culture and community building.

I was lucky to start working at a kimono shop, and every day was spent feeling the pull of the deep world of kimonos.

However, obi manufacturers and craftsmen involved in kimonos steadily stopped working, and I witnessed the industry go into decline. I thought that even if I tried to protect it, the background and culture of these superior techniques and the gentle, no-waste processes of making things would disappear.

The following year, I started a company that produces and sells plant dye and authentic indigo dye samue work clothes of such high quality that they cannot be found elsewhere. It became a Kamakura Commerce and Industry certified business for disseminating and raising awareness of Zen clothing culture from Kamakura, and we presented an exhibition at the main temple of Engaku-ji in Kita-Kamakura.

Awareness of Zen is spreading around the world and has an inseparable connection with the popularity of mindfulness seen in the last few years.

Samue combines the concept of Japanese clothes, with Japanese rationality and spirituality, Zen culture, and is a valuable solution for life in modern society.

I would like to share samue with the world, something from Japan that has a unique value.

Thank you very much for your support.

"Zenwear" Product Details

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

We have created 2 versions, the "smart model" and the "entry model," for sales overseas.

- Zenwear "smart model"

Zenwear's concept line, packed with its concept

Features

The jacket, in order to follow the base of the neck, has a calculated, fine, somewhat gentle curve line in the collar. Seam pockets attached to both sides, so that sewing thread is not visible in the front, are designed to create a simple and clean look. The mobility afforded by the lack of fasteners is also a feature. The cuffs, similar to a normal jacket, are long sleeves and hide the wrists partially, but, though ingenuity, they gradually spread from the shoulder.

This means that even when lifting ones arms, the jacket itself does not lift up.

We utilize elastic in the waist of the pants, so they are extremely comfortable and have the form of relaxed trousers. However, we were careful to make sure that no excess strings are visible, so they do not look overly casual.

The pant cuffs are straight, but the hems have bands attached to pull them together. They are made to be easy to remove; if you do not need them, you may remove them.

Fabric

We utilize "wanuno," which has the texture of Japanese paper. We utilize a special ultra-fine cotton yarn that is twisted after boiling, and carefully weave to a high density on an old shuttle. This allows us to achieve a strong, durable fabric that is also light and has a texture that is soft to the touch. The longer you use it, the more personality is revealed. Continuing to use it for decades will make it more and more like tanned leather. Authentic indigo dye and plant dyes match the samue well, and they result in beautiful colors. Dyeing high-density fabric means colors do not fade easily. Rubbed colors will slowly change, creating a unique texture.

Dye

Praised as "Japan Blue" by Westerners visiting Japan during the Meiji period, indigo became the national color of Japan. Simply through dyeing, the fabric itself becomes stronger, is sterilized, repels insects, removes odors, has a cooling effect in the summer and a warming effect in the winter, and also is effective in preventing and reducing rough skin and atopy (according to Hirosaki University research). It is viewed as a dyeing technology unique to Japan, unparalleled elsewhere in the world. It is characterized by a beautiful, violet/dark blue.

Other gentle colors, made from boiled plants, let one feel the four seasons of Japan.

The color variations, including authentic indigo, are the 7 colors below.

Sewing

Our sewing is done in Hiroshima Prefecture, the area know for work wear. Our sewing factory is a talented one, also working with famous designer brands, and its skills and know-how are at a very high level. We utilize sewing thread that is not ordinary spun yarn, made of polyester, but instead 100% cotton hard-twist thread, strengthened by the addition of a strong twist.

Our method is not simply to make look good. Instead, we consider how comfortable the samue is, how we can devise a way to preserve the design sensibilities, and use trial and error to make them stronger. We sew to preserve the design and the concept.

Sizes

Samue are worn with elastic. The size is flexible and has the benefit of being adjustable, so they are a more flexible sizes than standard contemporary clothes. We offer a unisex design in 4 sizes (S, M, L, LL).

- Zenwear "entry model"

The same concept, but easier to adopt: entry line

Features

While leaving the strength of Made in Japan intact, we made a simpler design. With a focus on mobility, we have employed a slightly more relaxed form.

(We use straight sleeves and hems, but depending on customer wishes, we can offer elastic and strings/cords.)

Fabric and Dye

We use dyed 100% cotton twill fabric from a historic domestic fabric manufacturer. The dyeing reputation is particularly high, with high-quality cotton that combines robustness and suppleness. The texture of the twill creates a sense of quality.

Sewing

A rarity now, we sew in a kimono garment factory. It has an established reputation for proper and careful work, and excels at cutting and sewing straight lines, a feature also of kimonos. The ease of the seamstresses shows comes through; you can feel their sincerity and wholeheartedness.

Size

Like normal samue, with a relaxed, slightly larger size. Please refer to the size guide image. We offer a unisex design in 5 sizes (S, M, L, LL, 3L).
